Faux ivory guitar picks offer a modern alternative to traditional materials such as bone, horn, and genuine ivory. They are designed to provide a dense, rigid, substantial playing feel while offering much greater consistency in machining, finishing, engraving, and repeatable production.

Faux ivory is a synthetic material made to resemble the appearance and dense character traditionally associated with natural ivory, without using actual ivory or other animal-derived material. In guitar picks, it provides a solid, rigid feel while allowing the material to be produced in consistent sheets or blanks that can be machined into repeatable shapes and thicknesses.
It is important to distinguish faux ivory from genuine ivory, bone, and horn. Genuine ivory is animal-derived and heavily restricted in trade. Bone and horn are also natural animal materials, but they have different structures and playing characteristics from ivory. Faux ivory belongs to a separate category: a modern synthetic substitute designed to capture some of the traditional look and feel while behaving more predictably during manufacturing.
Bone and ivory-like materials have long appealed to players because they are dense, rigid, and capable of being shaped into smooth, polished playing edges. Those same qualities also explain why natural bone remains popular for other guitar components such as nuts and saddles, where hardness and dimensional stability are highly valued.
In pick form, these materials offer a substantial feel with very little flex. Their density can make them feel more solid and deliberate than thin conventional plastics, while polished edges help them move cleanly across the strings.
That traditional combination of hardness, weight, and smooth finishing is part of what modern faux ivory aims to reproduce, but with greater consistency from one piece to the next.
Faux ivory and bone can produce a similarly dense, rigid playing feel, but they behave very differently as manufacturing materials.

Bone offers natural variation and individuality, while faux ivory trades some of that one-off character for greater control over thickness, shape, bevels, engraving, and finish.
For players, both provide a firm, substantial alternative to thin plastics; the larger difference is whether they prefer the individuality of a natural material or the predictability of a modern synthetic one.

Faux ivory is especially useful when a maker wants the visual character and substantial feel of traditional materials without the variability that comes with bone or horn.
Consistent from piece to piece: Density, color, and structure are much more predictable, making it easier to reproduce the same design accurately.
Clean machining and finishing: Faux ivory can be shaped, beveled, sanded, and polished with greater control than many natural materials.
Well suited to engraving: The material accepts detailed engraving consistently, which makes it a strong option for personalized guitar picks.
Traditional appearance without genuine ivory: It provides an ivory-like look while avoiding the sourcing and trade complications associated with real ivory.
Non-animal material: Players who prefer not to use bone, horn, or other animal-derived materials still have access to a dense, rigid pick with a classic aesthetic.

Bone still has legitimate appeal for players who specifically want a natural material. No two pieces are exactly alike, so color, grain, density, and small surface details can give each finished pick a more individual character.
It is also a familiar material in guitar construction. Bone remains widely used for nuts and saddles, where its hardness and traditional feel are part of the attraction, and some players value that same natural-material connection in a pick.
The tradeoff is consistency. Bone can vary from piece to piece, and working it involves more unpredictability in shaping, sanding, engraving, and final appearance. It also produces an unpleasant odor and residue during machining and sanding, which is one reason Iron Age has moved away from using it as a primary pick material.
Faux ivory picks feel dense, solid, and controlled in the hand, with very little flex compared with conventional thin plastics. The material has enough hardness to support a defined point and shaped bevel without feeling metallic or excessively harsh at the strings.
A well-finished faux ivory pick tends to release cleanly while still giving the player a clear sense of contact. The substantial body also makes the pick easier to anchor between the fingers, especially for players who prefer thicker designs.
Overall, the feel is closer to a rigid natural-material pick than to a flexible celluloid or nylon pick, but with the consistency of a modern synthetic material.

The biggest advantage is control. Faux ivory machines more predictably, takes engraving more consistently, and makes it easier to reproduce the same thickness, bevel, finish, and overall feel across multiple picks. That matters for both standard designs and personalized work.
It also avoids the complications surrounding genuine ivory entirely and gives players a non-animal alternative to bone or horn. From a manufacturing standpoint, that is simply cleaner and more practical, while still preserving the dense, substantial character and traditional appearance that make ivory-style materials appealing in the first place.
